I remember those, we used to drink in The Albion from 11am to 2pm 6 pints of Ben Truman and then head for double double, before heading to the ground.

I grew up in East Ham with a choice of Pie and Mash shops on my doorstep. Cookes at the top of the road and Muddies along the High Street opposite the Town Hall. Both iong gone.

As a kid with 2 bob pocket money on match day it was 1s 3d for pie and single mash and 9d to get in the North or South Bank.

As I became older and wealthier I graduated to Pie and single mash with portion of stewed eels and took standing in the West Stand for 2s 6d cant remember what I was paying pie mash and eels. But if you can't get eels with your pie and mash you aint in the right shop. At Cookes they had them live in big butler sink out front. Not like today frozen

If you want original pie and mash they are very authentic.

In recent years they have upped their game and improved the pastry and filling but don't worry it hasn't been re-engineered and given a turbo boost by a hipster. It's still what you'd expect.

Gone the same way as spangles, white dogshit, crombie coats and vauxhall victors. These things pass. It was a sad day when your only choice was pie and eels or whelks. Had a few pies and mash over the years and every time I felt that I should be liking it more than I did.
At Nathans once an obvious aficionado of the cuisine announced loudly 2 burnt, double mash and a splosh. Thought that was pretty cool though I must say.

Yes thats what im talking about. Hard to get jold of a proper good one at the moment. There used to be a stall on briadway market but thats gone. Theres a place that dies rhem on whitecross street at lunchtimes that is good. The best one ive had in London though is Bahm Mi Bay on Theobolds road. That place is nearly as good as the best one ive had in Hoi Anh.

We had a Manze Pie and Mash not more than 100 yds from our front door in Tooting. Never once went in there but watched some old tart cutting the heads of the eels in the front window once.

Re: Another Pie & Mash shop gone after 100 yrs!
There are still a couple of M. Manze hanging on in Peckham and Tower Bridge Road and Arment's just past Elephant off the Walworth Road.

For some reason my brain is convinced there was another M. Manze on the small row of shops just before Tower Bridge itself opposite Potters Fields

All the one's around Waterloo and Lambeth Walk bit the dust a long time ago...
